In a rare show of unity, leading property portals Rightmove and Zoopla have joined forces to back a growing campaign for Stamp Duty reform. The Government Petition, initiated by Andrews Property Group, is calling for a more flexible approach to Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT), proposing that buyers be allowed to spread payments over two to five years instead of paying the full amount within 14 days of completion.

This proposal aims to ease affordability pressures, particularly for first-time buyers and home movers, at a time when rising costs are making property transactions increasingly difficult. With over 80% of home movers and 40% of first-time buyers now paying Stamp Duty according to Zoopla data, the reform could unlock significant market activity and support broader economic growth.

The petition has already reached a milestone of 1,000 signatures and is gaining momentum. The next goal is 10,000 signatures, which would trigger a written response from the government, with 100,000 needed to prompt a Parliamentary debate.
